Cypress Cafe
by McKenzie
I have never been disappointed at the Cypress. The food is good and the service is good. The only reason I don't give the Cypress a fifth star is that I am never comfortable there. I can't exactly put my finger on it. Too pretentious maybe?
I have enjoyed the food. Could be me, could be because the place is so small that requesting second cup of coffee after dinner earns some minor scorn I can't say for sure but for my money the place lacks friendliness. Still for a business lunch I would go to the Cypress to impress my guest.
You know the word "guest" is an interesting word isn't it? "Guest" entails an "invitation" to enjoy -- and courtesy beyond what a stranger might expect. When a nice small intimate restaurant entices you in to their place are you a guest or a stranger? I need to ponder this. This affliction comes with having an MA in linguistics and a palate for good food ( Cypress has that.) and an expectation of friendly service.
Quiznos
by McKenzie
Located between Blockbuster Video and Katzen Music just half a block off Main Street downtown.
I only know the owners Bert and Janice through numerous trips to Quiznos to buy a sandwich. Today I had a double cheese steak sandwich. It was not a Philly in that there were no onions and grilled green pepper. Instead of grilling the sandwich it is heated and toasted in a conveyor type oven. When your sandwich comes out of the oven you can choose among a array of toppings.
Quizons started the toasted sandwich service about 10 years ago. Some other sandwich shops now offer their version of toasted sans. You might say a true Philly Cheese Steak san would have to be grilled but we don't live in South Philly we live in Durango. The sandwich I had today was very good.
I generally order a "Regular" sized sandwich but if I were going to share a sub with someone I'd probably go for the large. There is a good selection of sandwiches on the menu as well as some tasty salads. I have enjoyed the Black and Blue salad several times. Thinly sliced "Black Angus" beef and chunky blue cheese dressing over a bed of fancy lettuce. Mmmm good.
